At northlondonosteopaths, Alan Nevies and his colleagues are keen to incorporate any new information and share it with the relevant patients. Peta Bee, writing in The Times UK 22/4/23 focuses on the needs of women, in their 40s and 50s, who are going through the perimenopause. Perimenopause is the transitional period before the menopause. During this time women can experience lethargy, brain fog, night sweats, joint aches, weight gain and muscle aches. Emerging evidence has shown that exercising with weights can help to change the ratio of body fat to lean muscle and this change can help alleviate some of the symptoms listed above. A Swedish trial showed that women who weight trained 3 times a week saw the frequency of their symptoms drop by 44%. Joining this band wagon of promoting women training with weights Dr Nicky Keay, lecturer in medicine in UCL, says “Resistance training is essential for maintaining bone health and preventing muscle loss, in the face of declining hormone levels.”

These studies provide us with lots of information and at northlondonosteopaths, Alan Nevies and his colleagues would be happy to advise you what weights to use and how to combine them with the right exercises. In this way we can help with certain muscular skeletal symptoms that are connected to peri-menopause and menopause and improve the quality of life of our patients.
